Board Vacancy Information

Board of Trustees Vacancy Information

What does a School Board Do?

The most important thing a school board does is establish a vision that reflects a consensus of the board, community and district staff. The current vision is reflected in our Strategic Plan, which is available at https://montecitou.org/244397_2.  The school board has a wide variety of additional responsibilities, such as adopting a balanced annual budget and issuing interim financial reports, adopting the school calendar, negotiating contracts with employee unions, approving curriculum materials and school construction.  The school board is also responsible for hiring the superintendent, evaluating the superintendent, and determining if the superintendent’s contract should be renewed or another superintendent should be selected.

A school board member must ponder many questions when forming a vision, such as: What philosophy of education do we want our school to have?  What should our students know and be able to do when they graduate?  How can our school best educate students?  What goals should we set and how will we measure our success?  How do we allocate resources in order to effectively meet our goals?

Who Can Become a Board Member?

Any person is eligible to be a Governing Board member providing he or she is 1) 18 years of age or older, 2) a resident within the district boundaries, and 3) a registered voter.

How Long is the Term?

A full Board term is four years.  In this case, the Governing Board is only selecting an appointee that wil serve only until the next election.  Therefore, the Board will be filling the vacancy by making a provisional appointment until the next election in November 2024.  At that point, the Board Member may run for re-election (and, if elected, complete the final two years of Ms. Nigro’s original term) or end her or his service.

How Can Someone Apply?

Interested community members are invited to complete three things: 1) Board Member Vacancy Application (see link below), 2) a letter of interest, and 3) a personal resume to the Board, care of Superintendent Anthony Ranii (385 San Ysidro Road, Santa Barbara, CA 93108), indicating their interest and willingness to serve in this significant public capacity.  The application can be found on the link below or applications are available at the Montecito Union School School Office at 385 San Ysidro Road between 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.  During construction, our office is located off the South Parking Lot up the wheelchair ramp in classroom 28.

What is the Deadline to Apply, and When Does the New Board Member Start?

The final date for submitting applications is Tuesday, May 30 at 3:00 p.m.  If more than one candidate applies, candidates will be interviewed individually at a public meeting of the Board on Monday, June 5 at 3:30 p.m., and the Board will make its selection at that same meeting.  The person selected will join the Board at their regular meeting on Monday, June 12, 2023 at 8:30 am.  The person appointed shall hold office until the next regularly scheduled election for district Board Members in November 2024.

Questions should be directed to Anthony Ranii at (805) 698-3083 or aranii@montecitou.org.  You are also encouraged to  attend the Regular Board Meeting on May 16, 2023 at 4:00 p.m.  During this meeting, a fuller discussion of the Board role will be discussed, and members of the public will be invited to ask questions about the role and the selection process.

Public service to your local school is an incredible way to get involved, volunteer in your community, and make a lasting, positive difference in the lives of children.  Please consider applying!

Sincerely,

Anthony Ranii

Superintendent
