• Pic Santa Barbara, CA – May 16, 2017 The Montecito Union School District Board of Trustees has appointed Mr. Anthony Ranii, as the new Superintendent of the Montecito Union School District. Mr. Ranii is currently the Superintendent of Hillsborough City School District in San Mateo County. After an extensive five-month search process, the Board chose Mr. Ranii for his broad and established instructional leadership roles across all grade levels, strength in collaboration and focus on increasing student learning and achievement. His start date is July 17, 2017.

    “I am thrilled that Anthony Ranii will be joining the Montecito Union School District as its superintendent.  It was immediately clear to the Board that Mr. Ranii is a strong and passionate educational leader who will bring to this position a high standard of excellence, a strong work ethic, a collaborative spirit and most importantly, a love of children.  I am confident that MUS will thrive under Mr. Ranii’s leadership, and that the greater Montecito community will likewise be enhanced by his presence,” said Gwyn Lurie, Board President of Montecito Union School District.

    Mr. Ranii has 18 years of experience in public education. He has served as the superintendent of the Hillsborough City School District since July of 2009. Under his leadership the students in Hillsborough have performed in the top 1% of the state and earned many top honors. Before becoming superintendent he was the principal of West Hillsborough School from June of 2006 until June of 2009.  His teaching career included teaching in Kindergarten, third, fourth, and fifth grades.  Mr. Ranii has also developed writing curriculum for the middle school grades and has provided numerous trainings to teachers, paraprofessionals, and administrators. Mr. Ranii currently serves as the president of Schools for Sound Finance, and advocacy group for Basic Aid School Districts in California.

    Mr. Ranii graduated Summa Cum Laude from Allegheny College and holds a Master's Degree from National University in Teaching and Learning.  He grew up in Southern California and relocated to the Bay Area after college. Mr. Ranii is married to his wife Lindsay and has three children and they are looking forward to relocating to Santa Barbara and starting a new adventure.

    During Mr. Ranii’s superintendency he has:

    1.      Successfully implemented the Common Core State Standards.

    2.      Established I-labs at elementary schools, allowing students to innovate and solve real world problems.

    3.      Strengthened existing partnerships with the Town of Hillsborough and other community groups.

    4.      Reenergized writing instruction and ignited a new passion for writing within students.

    5.      Completed all bond construction projects, early and under budget.

    6.      Built a new classroom wing with District capital funds as well as completed safety and beautification projects in partnership with parent groups and the Hillsborough Beautification Foundation, Hillsborough Recreation and other partners.

    7.      Refinanced bond indebtedness, with a resulting savings of millions of dollars to Hillsborough taxpayers.

    The Montecito Union School District Board was committed to a rigorous superintendent search process and with providing the community clear and comprehensive information and input in a process that began in January. The firm Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates was hired and conducted focus groups, community meetings and an online survey to collect extensive input on the desired qualities of the next superintendent. More than 40 applicants applied for the position from across the country.
